Get to know Galician! -

The course will be held in English.



Galician ("o galego") is the language of Galicia in north-west Spain, which is also spoken in Asturias and Leon. It is a Romance sister language of Spanish, Italian and French. And a twin of Portuguese - or is it its parent language? For centuries, these two languages were a single entity and were the language of the ancient province of Roman Gallaecia and later the Swabian kingdom of Galicia (yes, the Swabians, the people who came from what is now Germany, Swabia). Its oldest surviving text dates back to 1173, in the Middle Ages it became, together with Occitan, the language of poets, even the kings of Castile used it for their poetry. From here began its process of prohibition, its revitalisation, its current official status in the Autonomous Community and its inexhaustible artistic use.



After a historical and geographical introduction, we will also approach the cultural part of Galicia and even try to sing some songs. For those who dare to learn this language, the doors are open to Spanish and Portuguese and thus to a world of 800 million speakers.
