Enjoy gentle guided walks to Berlin’s secret places and stimulating English conversation about birds appearance, habitat and habits.
Köppchensee and the surrounding Niedermoorwiesen form a nature conservation area on the northern boundary of Berlin. The lake was created in the nineteenth century by peat diggers and is now home to many species of birds and amphibians. The surrounding area, once used as a rubbish tip, has long since been reclaimed by nature, a mixture of meadowland and abandoned orchards provides a rich habitat for many endangered species of wild bees and butterflies, birds and plants. Above the lake a sandy cliff is one of the few places in Berlin where sand martins nest. An adjoining nature reserve, Eichwerder Moorwiesen follows the Tegeler Fließ for 2.5 kilometres to Eichwerder Steg, a nature trail, maintained by NABU Berlin, with over 40 detailed information boards describing individual species of birds, insects, reptiles and plants.

❔ The distance will be 10 kilometres, bring sturdy shoes, binoculars and rainwear, if required. Meeting point is Alt-Lübars bus terminus (Alter Dorfkrug).
